Tips to Tailor Your CDI Orientation Program: Do Your Efforts Measure Up? (Track 1)

This session provides participants with the tape by which to measure their health systems’ requirements, assess a new hires’ skill set, and tailor orientation programs to ensure the success of both educators and CDI staff.

During this session, Peterson shares tools that can immediately be used to build personal resilience as well as tools to help positively impact those around us. Participants will complete a self-assessment to identify current strengths and opportunities for growth as well as exploring key areas of resilience including growth mindset, self-compassion, optimism, and innovation.

Too often, organizations see denials as a detraction from the benefits of CDI reviews. Dawn Valdez, RN, LNC, CDIP, CCDS, CDI education specialist and CDI Boot Camp instructor for HCPro in Middleton, Massachusetts, explores how CDI specialists’ roles of differ from that of traditional coding or clinical roles and how applying compliant coding and querying practices are essential aspects of any CDI program. Participants will learn how the ACDIS Code of Ethics, Guidelines for Compliant Query Practices, and the evolution of the medical record all play a part in helping CDI professionals practice their craft effectively.

Management of Physician Support on a Virtual Platform (Track 2)

Misty Hollandsworth, RN, CCDS, CDI supervisor and Amber Horton, BSN, RN, CCDS, CDI specialist for Parkview Health, share their effort to adapt physician education to a virtual platform. During this session, participants will explore opportunities to collaborate with coding on education, understand challenges and benefits of transitioning to a virtual platform, and focus in on top concerns Parkview reviewed in collaboration with its hospitalist physician team.

Regulatory Committee Update: Howard Rodenberg, MD, MPH, CCDS, chair of the ACDIS Regulatory Committee and the CDI physician advisor at Baptist Health in Jacksonville, Florida, and Sharme Brodie, RN, CCDS, CCDS-O, CDI education specialist and CDI Boot Camp instructor for HCPro in Middleton, Massachusetts, discuss proposed changes to the inpatient prospective payment system, how to compose effective feedback to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) related to those changes, and how to best address regulatory concerns related to CDI practices.
